Radius Targeting: What it is & How it Works

Jan 31, 2024 | PPC

Whether you’ve realized it or not, you have probably experienced the art of radius targeting. How many times have you noticed certain ads on your phone when you enter a certain location? Or realized that you never really have to search for businesses “near me” because Google already knows? Probably more times than you can count.

WHAT IS RADIUS TARGETING?

Radius Targeting is an advertising technique that allows businesses to show advertisements to customers within a specific geographic radius. While browsing on their phone in that certain location, people will be shown those advertisements.

When it comes to location-based marketing, radius targeting is a fundamental component that works hand-in-hand with geofencing technology. While geofencing typically sets up a virtual boundary around a precise location, such as a retail store, radius targeting allows for more flexibility by covering a broader, circular area around a pinpointed center, which can be vital for businesses that want to draw customers from a general vicinity.

However, radius targeting differs from other forms of location-based advertising, such as geo-targeting or beacons, which might cater to broader geographic segments or require proximity to a physical device. Radius targeting specifically combines the immediacy associated with proximity marketing with the broader reach of regional advertising, allowing a highly tailored approach that connects businesses to their most relevant and accessible customer base.

What are the benefits of radius targeting?

1. Many advertisers use this technique to appeal to a certain group of people that may be in a specific area and who would be interested in their businesses.

For example, a luxury car dealership will want to target people from a high income geographic location.

2. Radius targeting can help your business communicate directly with your customer by hyper targeting ads.

With the combination of targeting elements including radius targeting, you are able to appeal to future customers by making your advertisements convenient for the customer. For example, a local restaurant can run their advertisements in a certain location, to a certain group of people, and at a certain time. This restaurant could advertise within a 10 mile radius of their location, to middle aged men and women, and at around 6 o’clock. By combining these targeting elements, a business is able to ensure that they are advertising to their target consumer.

3. Radius targeting helps align ad-serving with business operations.

Many businesses, such as home services or food delivery, will operate based on a set radius from their business location. E.g. a pizza restaurant may deliver within a 10 mile radius. Using radius targeting helps ensure these businesses show ads to their potential customers and rarely to anyone else.

The Role of Radius Targeting in Mobile Marketing Strategies

Mobile devices have started shaping the landscape of modern marketing and commerce. With the majority of consumers using smartphones for local searches and shopping, mobile marketing strategies have evolved to leverage this trend. Radius targeting emerges as a key player in this digital shift, enhancing the potential of mobile campaigns to reach the right audience at the most opportune moments.

The advent of radius targeting has enabled businesses to create highly personalized mobile marketing strategies. By targeting users within a specific geographical area, companies can send tailored messages and offers to potential customers who are in close proximity to their physical locations. This refined approach not only increases the relevance of ads but also the likelihood of engagement and conversion, as the messaging resonates more with the on-the-go lifestyle of the mobile-centric consumer.

Radius targeting has been the cornerstone of many triumphant mobile marketing campaigns. For instance, a national retail chain might deploy a radius targeting strategy to entice customers with promotions when they are near any of their stores. By doing so, they've reported significant upticks in foot traffic and in-store sales. Similarly, local restaurants have found success in sending lunch offers to users within a 5-mile radius, effectively boosting their midday service. These examples highlight the power of implementing radius targeting within a comprehensive mobile marketing strategy.

Maximize Your Ad Efficiency with Radius Targeting in PPC Campaigns

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising is an effective way to drive traffic to your website, increase conversions, and boost sales. Leveraging radius targeting within these campaigns can be especially powerful for businesses looking to attract local customers. By focusing ad spend on users within a specific geographical area, companies can significantly improve their campaign's return on investment (ROI) and relevance to potential customers.

Setting Up a Google Ads Campaign with Radius Targeting

To begin radius targeting with Google Ads, you will first need to create a new campaign or modify an existing one.

Follow these steps:

  • Navigate to the "Locations" section of your campaign settings.
  • Select “Enter another location”
  • Click on "Advanced Search" and select "Radius."
  • Enter the address or location where you want to target your ads and specify the radius distance around this point.
  • Choose a radius that makes sense for your business and audience. The optimal range can vary based on urban versus rural settings and the nature of your offered products or services.
  • Review and save your settings to activate radius targeting for your campaign.

You will also have the option to only target people physically in the location you selected, “Presence”, or those with a “Presence and interest” in your target location. Selecting “Presence” can help narrow your targeting even further and ensure that only users that are physically within your targeted area see your ads.

Optimizing Ad Spend with Radius Targeting

Applying radius targeting to your PPC campaigns requires strategic thinking to optimize your ad spend.

Here are suggested strategies for enhancing campaign performance:

  • Analyze performance data: Monitor metrics such as click-through rate (CTR), conversion rate, and cost per acquisition (CPA) to understand the impact of your radius targeting.
  • Adjust bid modifiers based on location: Increase bids in high-performing areas and decrease them in locations with lower engagement.
  • Use location-specific ad copy and landing pages: Tailor your ads and landing pages to resonate with the local audience within your targeted radius.
  • Incorporating these strategies helps to refine your PPC efforts, allowing for a more focused approach that aligns with the behaviors and needs of your local consumer base. Just as a craftsman selects the right tool for each detail, so too must advertisers choose the correct radius to encapsulate their ideal customers effectively.

Quick Tip:

Google doesn’t (yet) offer geo-fencing and the smallest radius that you can cover is 1 mile. That can be a pretty big area. If you want an even smaller number, try 1 kilometer.

Radius targeting can be a great tool for businesses because it silences some of the advertising noise that they see on a regular basis. By being able to display advertisements that appeal to a certain group of people in a certain location, you are able to increase your chances of a sale.
